Embark on a small-group, 3-hour whale watching and wildlife sightseeing tour from Hoonah, Alaska. Every season humpback whales come in large numbers to Hoonah to feed on the nutrient-rich waters of Glacier Bay and Icy Strait before migrating south again for the winter. The whale population begins to arrive in Hoonah in May, and stays through September.

The tour begins when you are picked up from the Excursions Hub at Icy Strait Point. A short drive along Shaman Point to the Hoonah City Commercial Dock will have you at the boat. Along the way, keep an eye out for local wildlife including bald eagles, blacktail deer, and more. Hoonah is home to the largest concentration of Alaskan Brown Bears in the world.

While traveling along the shorelines, sightings of bears, deer, coastal ducks and geese, blue heron, puffin, swans, terns, cormorants and more are common. In the water you may get a chance to spot humpback, Orca, sea otters, sea lions, porpoises, and seals. Your captains are knowledgeable guides who are happy to share their wealth of knowledge. The boats are built for speed and comfort, and perfectly suited for travel along Alaska’s waterways. With viewing decks and heated cabins, guests will stay warm and dry as they experience the wonder and beauty of the trip.

Humpbacks are amazingly active and typical whale sightings will include diving, blows, and flukes (tails). Lucky whale-watchers may get to see bubble-net feeding, a cooperative feeding method where a pod forms a circle and dives under the water. They then blow air to create a wall of bubbles that force krill and plankton to the surface where the whales can eat them.

You will return to the docks and enjoy transport back to Icy Strait Point with plenty of time to board your ship or explore downtown Hoonah.

Take the road less traveled, go where only the locals go, and experience Chichagof Island at your own pace in a Jeep Wrangler ( max capacity of five).  This is a 8 hour rental for the jeep, this is an unguided experience that is especially appropriate for visitors who like getting off the beaten path and are comfortable in remote wilderness settings.  GPS Navigational Aide, Spot Satellite Locating Beacon, Map of Hoonah, and Bear Spray included.

There is no better way to explore Hoonah, Chichagof Island and the Tongass National Forest.  We pick you up at the Excursions Hub which is a short walk from where the Cruise Ships Dock.  We then give you a safety briefing and orientation about the town and you are off!  There are miles of logging roads and wilderness to venture into.  One of the biggest draws is the chance to see wildlife like brown bear, deer, and the many birds and small mammals that inhibit the island.  Be sure to keep your eye out for marine mammals as well as you drive along the coast.  Take your time and enjoy seeing parts of Alaska that are seldom seen by non-locals.  This is not an extreme 4 x 4 experience but the roads are dirt/gravel and may be bumpy/ and or muddy.  Always remember that you are in bear country and that good bear sense needs to be exercised.  All jeeps come equipped with a small cooler, bear spray, and a SPOT tracking device/emergency beacon.

Embark on a small-group, 3-hour land based tour of Chichagof Island. The community of Hoonah, with a year round population of approximately 850, is located in the northern part of Chichagof Island. The vast majority of the island is pure, uninhabited, Alaskan wilderness teeming with wildlife! Chichagof Island has the highest population of bears per square mile of any place on Earth.

Your tour begins when you are picked at the Excursions Hub at Icy Strait Point. Chichagof Island, or Shee Kaax, is an island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Alaska Panhandle. At 75 miles long and 50 miles wide, it has a land area of 2,048.61 square miles - making it the fifth largest island in the United States. Chichagof Island has the highest population of bears per square mile of any place on Earth.

The community of Hoonah, with a year round population of approximately 750, is located in the northern part of Chichagof Island. The vast majority of the island is pure, uninhabited, Alaskan wilderness teeming with wildlife! The Ursus arctos, or Brown Bear, is the king of the forest but Sitka black-tail deer, bald eagle, mink, marten, beaver, duck and sea birds thrive on the island and are frequently spotted on this tour. One of the last grizzly strongholds, the dense rain forests of Chichagof Island in southeast Alaska hide more of brown bear per square mile than any other place on Earth.

This tour is offered May through September because those months afford the highest probability of seeing bears. In late April and May bears are coming out of hibernation. In June, the bears are mating and eating grasses on the tidal flats. Older males fight other males for dominance and mating rights with the females, who at times, are not receptive and force the male to give chase. Not too far off from human behavior is it? In July, the Salmon start their migration from the ocean up the rivers and you'll find the bears feeding in coastal rivers and streams. In August and September, the salmon have made it further up the rivers to shallow streams where the bears chase them.

Depending on the month and the weather, the wildlife can be found in different locations throughout the island. Your guide spends a lot of time in the forest and knows where to look.

Please Note: While there is a high probability of seeing bears, we cannot guarantee sighting. We can guarantee a journey into wilderness and a chance to experience the sheer beauty and ruggedness of the Tongass National Forest! This tour is limited to 12. We will allow up to 14 if the group is all together. Otherwise, we like to leave extra room for comfort.

This tour is operated in the Tongass National Forest under special use permit from the Forest Service, USDA.
